The Lafayette Escadrille

Misc. Artifacts - Les Cigognes

Escadrille N.3, Les Cigognes (The Storks), was the most decorated of the early French squadrons. The following is a water color of six original Storks.

The water color caricature shown below is among the W.B. Haviland artifacts and is dated 1918. The artist was Jean de Moulignon who was briefly an N.3 pilot and who created an original oil painting that appears in the Le Bourget Museum, Musée de l'Air et de l'Espace. It appears that the Museum's original oil may have been done in 1916.

Moulignon was picked by Capt. Brocard for the task. He primarily painted animals and wildlife which, he was told, was the proper experience for this task. As a pilot Moulignon reportedly once had one of his eyes become frozen and had to insert his ring into the space around his eye to keep his eyelid open.

Appearing left to right: Helene the stork, Unit Commander Felix Brocard, Gorges Guynemer, René Dorme, Parisol the dog, Alfred Heurtaux, Albert Deullin and Mathieu de La Tour.

(Special thanks to Aerodrome members who provided me with much "missing" information about this particular piece.)
