An Earlybird's Scrapbook

The Lafayette Escadrille

Book One, Page One, Left

First Battle of the Somme, June 24-Nov. 13, 1916

Top - "Winter on the Somme, 1916-17." (This is the area around Verdun).

Bottom - "Lined up ready to start patrol over the lines, First battle of the Somme, Sept. 1916."
The three aircraft appear to be model 17 C.1 Nieuports.

(This battle included mounted cavalry, the first use of tanks, air patrols, and ended in a virtual deadlock after it cost the lives of 195,000 French, 420,000 British and 600,000 Germans.)
