Langley Field was commissioned in 1917 as a an experimental proving ground for Army, Navy and NACA aircraft. The facility also included schools of aerial photography and bombing. As with other early aviation experiments, tragedies were bound to occur.

The lower photograph was not captioned in the scrapbook but is believed to be the barracks area of Langley circia 1920.
