USNAS Porto Corsini

Daniel Keyser Photos, Part One

This series of photos was provided by Daniel H. Keyser, Aide to Capt. Haviland at Porto Corsini. The first photo is of Seaman Keyser.

Seaman Keyser is quoted in Lafayette Escadrille, Pilot Biographies by Dennis Gordon.

"He was one of the nicest persons I have ever known. I never heard him raise his voice. The flyers were supposed to drop propaganda leaflets on Pola. The Austrians returned the visit next night with bombs. (Haviland) said, 'to Hell with the leaflets, we will take bombs next time.'

"The Austrians came over quite a few times but did no damage for most of the bombs were duds. Captain Haviland never took cover during a raid. His orderly and I sat out the raids in building used as a store house and we would see him strolling along outside as through he knew the bombs were duds."
